Change Inventory Unit of Measure

How to Change an Inventory Unit of Measure

Problem: How can the stocking unit of measure be changed on an inventory item that is already in use?

There are times when an inventory item is being stocked in pounds, for example, and the user wants to start stocking in tons. Because the average cost of the item is tied to the stocking unit of measure, certain steps must be followed before a change is done. If this procedure is not followed, then you could be costing fertilizer that sold at a cost of 10-cents per pound at 10-cents per ton.

Solution:

  1. Go to INV > Inventory > Stock Adjustments.

  2. Choose the location and the item you want to change.

  3. Subtract out the amounts that are in quantity and value for this inventory item and enter through.

  4. This will zero out your inventory items in stock.

  5. Go to INV > Inventory > Item Maintenance and View/ Edit the inventory item you want to change.

  6. You can edit and change the stocking unit of measure to the new unit of measure in price schedules screen.

  7. Go back to INV > Inventory > Stock Adjustments and enter your location code and item number again.

  8. Add to your item the new quantity and dollar amounts based on the NEW stocking unit of measure.

NOTE: The dollar value should be the same. It will only be the quantity that changes.

WARNING:

  1. If this item is a component of a formula, manufactured, grain formula, or grain manufactured item, you must update the components.
Look at the inventory item maintenance show where used menu option. It will provide a list of all the items this inventory item that you just changed UOM is a component of.

  2. Make a screen print of all the places this item is used.
Note that there may be more than one screen of items.

  3. Now go into each of the formula/manufactured items and enter through each of the component listings.
In the example above, you need to edit V17-1215BK item.

The goal is to enter through the screens with the quantities and let them update the formula.inv (I08_FORMULAS) table with their new ratios. You will not see a change occur as you go through the screens because AGRIS will be filling in the new ratios as each new filter screen displays. Save the item to keep the changes.
