How to: Copy Orphaned User Profiles (Account Unknown)
The workstation was orphaned (removed from one domain and joined to a new domain, possibly with the same name) and when trying to copy the user profile, the old profile shows as Unknown.
The workstation can no longer authenticate the old user profile so therefore it doesn't know what type of profile it is. When going to My Computer - Properties - Advanced - User Profiles and Settings, the account shows up as Account Unknown and will not allow you to copy it to the new domain user.
Log in as the new domain user in order to create the new profile under c:\Documents and Settings\ - the contents of this new profile will be deleted in a later step.
Log out and then log in as the domain administrator to the new domain (the machine must be joined to the domain first).
From the command prompt, go to c:\documents and settings\(old user profile)
Type attrib -s -h ntuser.ini (do a dir to make sure this file is there, if it isn't then make sure you are in the user profile and not just document and settings)
Type attrib -s -h ntuser.dat.log
Repeat these two attrib commands in the new user profile folder
Delete the entire contents of the new user profile folder
Copy the entire contents of the old user profile directory into the new user profile directory
At the command prompt, go to the new user profile folder
Type attrib +s +h ntuser.ini and attrib +s +h ntuser.dat.log
Log out and log back in as the new user and you should have the old user's profile
