Spreadsheets Opening in Notepad: How to Default to Microsoft Excel

Spreadsheets from AGRIS always open in Notepad, How to change this so they open in Microsoft Excel

The spreadsheets will open in notepad instead of Excel for two reasons:

  • Microsoft Excel must be installed on the machine running AGRIS.

  • The .XLS and .CSV file formats need to open in Excel by default. To check this follow these steps:

1. Double-click My Computer
2. Click Tools - Folder Options... - File Types
3. Scroll down the list of Extensions until you see XLS
4. If it is set to Notepad, change it to Excel by clicking Change - Microsoft Excel - make sure that Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked - click OK
5. Repeat steps 3-4 for CSV files as well
6. Click Close and close the My Computer window
