AGRIS Customer Documentation
Adding a Price to Commodities
Use this guide to add or update pricing values that affect a commodity in AGRIS. In practice, “adding a price to a commodity” can mean different things depending on what you are trying to do: setting a cash price used for valuation, defining price limits on the commodity code, or entering a price later on tickets, delivery sheets, or contracts. This page focuses first on the commodity record itself, then shows where transaction pricing is entered.
Key point: A commodity code setup does not normally create live transactional prices by itself. The commodity record stores defaults and controls such as hedgeability, board defaults, min/max price range, and month-end cash price used in valuation. Actual pricing for contracts, tickets, and delivery sheets is entered in their respective pricing functions.
When to use each pricing option
Need | Where to go | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Set or update a commodity-level cash value | GRN > Commodity Tables > Commodity Codes > View/Edit | Stores the commodity’s cash price used for valuation and setup-related reference values. |
Adjust allowed price range | GRN > Commodity Tables > Commodity Codes > View/Edit | Controls the Min/Max Price range so users are warned or stopped when a price is outside allowed limits. |
Price a contract | GRN > Contracts > Price Contracts | Adds scheduled price, futures, and basis to the selected contract. |
Price a delivery sheet | GRN > Contracts > Price Delivery Sheets | Adds pricing to a delivery sheet application. |
Price a ticket | GRN > Contracts > Price Tickets | Adds pricing directly to a ticket application. |
Update the price on a commodity code
If your goal is to maintain the commodity’s reference pricing or month-end valuation price, edit the commodity code.
Go to GRN > Commodity Tables > Commodity Codes.
Select View/Edit.
Enter the Commodity Code and Location Code, then click OK.
Review the setup screens and move through the commodity record as needed.
Enter or update the pricing-related fields on the commodity, including the commodity cash price where your process requires it.
Save and exit.
Important context: AGRIS documentation shows that users often update the commodity code with the correct month-end cash price before running inventory valuation and month-end procedures. That value is used to value grain inventory in reporting.
Adjust the commodity Min/Max Price range
If users are getting a Commodity Price is Out of Range warning or stop, the issue is usually the commodity’s allowed price range rather than the transaction itself.
Go to GRN > Commodity Tables > Commodity Codes.
Select View/Edit.
Open the commodity and location.
Adjust the Min/Max Price values.
Save the changes.
Use caution: Increasing the allowed range solves validation issues, but it does not price the commodity for you. It only changes what prices the system will accept.
Price contracts, delivery sheets, or tickets
If you need to assign a real transaction price, use the pricing function for the specific document type.
Price a contract
Go to GRN > Contracts > Price Contracts.
Enter the Location Code.
Enter P for purchases or S for sales.
Select the contract number.
Enter the quantity to be priced and applied.
Enter the delivery and due dates.
Set the Price Status to Priced, Unpriced, or Settled as needed.
Enter the Pricing Date, Board Name, Futures Month, and either the Price or the Futures and Basis Amount.
Click OK to save.
Price a delivery sheet
Go to GRN > Contracts > Price Delivery Sheets.
Select the location, purchase/sales code, delivery sheet number, and application number.
Enter delivery and due dates.
Enter the Price Status, Pricing Date, Board Name, Futures Month, and price details.
Save the pricing.
Price a ticket
Go to GRN > Contracts > Price Tickets.
Enter the location, inbound/outbound code, ticket number, and application number.
Enter delivery and due dates.
Enter the Price Status, Pricing Date, Board Name, Futures Month, and price details.
Save the pricing.
Tip: If a ticket is already on a delivery sheet, it cannot be priced directly until the delivery sheet is reversed.
Common pricing fields explained
Price: The scheduled price per unit of measure.
Futures Amount: The futures component of the price.
Basis Amount: The basis component of the price.
Board Name: The exchange or board default tied to the commodity setup.
Futures Month: The valid board month used for the pricing record.
Price Status: Usually P for Priced, U for Unpriced, or X for Settled.
Best practices
Use Commodity Codes > View/Edit for setup-level price controls and valuation values.
Use Price Contracts, Price Delivery Sheets, or Price Tickets for live transaction pricing.
Review Min/Max Price before assuming a pricing entry is wrong.
Confirm the commodity’s default board and futures month if futures-based pricing is not calculating as expected.
In multi-location environments, verify the correct location-specific commodity record is being edited.
Recommended approach: If the request is simply “add a price to a commodity,” start by confirming whether the user means a valuation price on the commodity code or an actual transactional price on a contract, ticket, or delivery sheet. The correct menu path depends on that answer.
